He worked as a critic, a writer, and a manager. Most importantly, he was the first recognized stage director in America. This meant he controlled almost every part of a show. He was known for being a very strict boss. He even made actors pay fines if they were late or forgot lines. Because of this, people called him "the autocrat of the stage."

Running a theater required many different skills. Daly gathered a group of actors to work together as a permanent company. He led them through many different kinds of plays. He adapted stories from other countries to make them new. He also brought Shakespeare's comedies to America in fresh ways. He even took his whole company on tours to England, Germany, and France. This helped many actors learn their craft and find success.

He later opened a second Daly's Theatre in London in 1893. He was even honored with the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame. This is a very prestigious award for American Catholics. He lived to be 60 years old before he died in Paris.

People can still see Daly's influence in how plays are made today. He helped create the way directors manage a whole production. One of his most famous ideas was a scene in a play. In "Under the Gaslight," a hero is tied to railroad tracks. The heroine saves him just before a train arrives. This became a very famous way to show excitement in stories. Even though some critics disagreed with his methods, his work changed the stage forever.
