He was a writer, a critic, and a manager. He was also the first big stage director in America. This means he controlled every part of a play. He was a very strict boss. He even made actors pay fines if they were late. Some people called him the "autocrat of the stage."

Daly built his own theaters. He opened one in New York in 1879. He opened another in London in 1893. He helped many new actors find success. He even gave chances to untried actors. He wrote many plays, too. One famous play was called "Under the Gaslight." In this play, a hero is tied to railroad tracks. A woman saves him just in time! He also made new versions of plays by Shakespeare. Some critics did not like his new ways. But Daly stayed a leader in the theater world. He loved books very much. He died in Paris in 1899.
