Many people called her the greatest of her time. She was born in 1858. Her father and grandfather were both actors. She joined their acting group when she was only four years old.

Duse had a very special way of acting. She did not use much makeup. She did not try to use big stage tricks. Instead, she tried to become the character. She let the feelings of the character show through her body. This made her work feel very real and true.

She traveled to many places to perform. She went to South America, Russia, and the United States. In 1896, she finished a big tour in America. During this time, the President and his wife saw her shows. The First Lady even held a tea for her at the White House.
