Many people called her the greatest performer of her time. She was born in 1858 in Vigevano, Lombardy. Her father, Alessandro, and her grandfather, Luigi, were both actors. Because her family was poor, she began working at age four. She traveled from city to city with different acting groups. This early start helped her learn the craft of the stage. She became very well known for playing roles like La Dame aux camélias.

Duse had a very special way of acting. She did not use much makeup or big stage tricks. Instead, she tried to "eliminate the self" to become her character. She let the inner joys and grief of a role show through her body. This made her work feel very real and true to the audience. Some people thought her acting was just natural. However, she actually worked very hard to master her craft. She wanted her acting to come from within rather than using fake effects.

Her career took her all over the world. In 1893, she toured South America, Russia, and the United States. She started those trips as an unknown person. By the end, people recognized her as a genius. In 1896, she finished a very successful tour of America. President Grover Cleveland and his wife even attended her shows. The First Lady held the first White House tea ever for an actress to honor her.

Duse worked with many famous writers and artists. She performed plays by Henrik Ibsen and Gabriele D'Annunzio. D'Annunzio even wrote four plays just for her. She also had a long relationship with the poet Arrigo Boito. Duse was often compared to another famous actress, Sarah Bernhardt. While some people argued about who was better, others like George Bernard Shaw chose Duse. In 1923, she became the first woman on the cover of Time magazine.

Duse's life was not always easy. She often struggled with her health due to many years of traveling. She retired in 1909 but returned to the stage in 1921. She even made one film called Cenere in 1916. She died of pneumonia in 1924 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was 65 years old when she passed away. Today, her life inspires many artists, including the dance pioneer Martha Graham. A theater in Bologna is even named in her honor.
