She was one of the most successful actresses in the early 1900s. People loved her because she had a strong and charming personality. She was also known for her great beauty and elegance. Bertini helped change how people acted on screen. Instead of using old-fashioned styles, she focused on showing real and true feelings. This made her movies feel much more alive to the audience.

Acting was a big part of her life from a young age. She first performed on stages before moving to movies. At age seventeen, she began working in the new Italian movie industry. She did much more than just act in her films. In the 1915 movie Assunta Spina, she helped write the script. She also claimed to be the true director of that film. She used new acting techniques to make the story feel real.

Bertini's life began in Prato, Italy. She was born Elena Seracini Vitiello on January 5, 1892. Her mother, Adelina di Venanzio Fratiglioni, may have been an actress too. In 1892, Bertini was registered at an orphanage as Elena Taddei. Later, her mother married Arturo Vitiello in 1910. This is when she took his family name. She eventually became known to the world as Francesca Bertini.

Her career was very busy and full of many different roles. By 1915, she had already made over 50 films. She played many types of characters in her movies. She could act as a fancy, elegant lady or a common woman. Some of her famous roles included Odette, Fedora, and Tosca. She also played the Lady of the Camellias. In 1920, the Fox Film Corporation in Hollywood offered her a contract. She said no because she wanted to live in Switzerland with her husband.

After her husband, Paul Cartier, passed away, she moved back to Rome. The film industry in Italy changed a lot during her life. It went through a period of crisis and censorship. Later, World War II caused a break in making films. Bertini stayed quiet for many years until director Bernardo Bertolucci found her. He convinced her to act in his 1976 movie, Novecento. She played a nun in that film. She lived to be 93 years old and died in Rome in 1985.
