Burbage was known for taking on very large and difficult roles. Between the years 1580 and 1610, there were only about twenty roles with more than 800 lines. Out of those twenty massive roles, Burbage acted in thirteen of them. He was the first actor to play the main part in the tragedy Hamlet. He also played famous characters like Romeo, Juliet, Macbeth, and Othello. He performed roles for many other great writers like Ben Jonson and John Webster. His ability to play such big parts showed his great power as an actor.

His path into the theatre began with his father, James Burbage. James was a builder and a theatre owner who founded a permanent playhouse. Growing up around the theatre helped Richard learn the basics of painting and colors. After his father died in February 1597, Richard and his brother Cuthbert took over. They worked hard to protect their family's interests in two London theatres. They kept the Blackfriars Theatre and leased it to a man named Henry Evans. They also dealt with the dismantling of a building called The Theatre.

In 1599, the pieces of The Theatre were moved to a new spot. These parts were used to build the famous Globe theatre on the Thames River. The Burbage brothers kept half the shares in this new playhouse. They gave the other half to Shakespeare and his fellow actors. Richard was a very busy man with many different jobs. He was a lead actor, a painter, and a housekeeper for two playhouses. He also earned money as a sharer in the King's Men company.

Burbage acted for 35 years and never truly retired from the stage. He continued to perform with the King's Men until he died in 1619. He was 52 years old when he passed away. His death caused so much grief that it was a very sad time for London. He was buried at St Leonard's in Shoreditch near the old theatres. Some people even believe that Shakespeare's Hamlet was partly inspired by the death of Richard's father. Today, his life is remembered through many plays and famous portraits.
