Sir Ralph Richardson was a famous English actor.

He was a major star on both the stage and in films. Along with John Gielgud and Laurence Olivier, he was part of a trio of actors who led British theatre in the 20th century. People often described his acting as poetic or even magical. He was known for being a bit eccentric in his own ways. Rather than playing only grand tragic heroes, he loved playing unique character parts. This helped him stand out in both old and new plays.

Becoming an actor was not his first plan.

He actually studied art at the Brighton School of Art first. He also worked as an office boy for an insurance company. He found office life quite difficult because he lacked concentration. Everything changed when he saw a production of Hamlet in Brighton. This performance inspired him to pursue acting immediately. He used money left to him by his grandmother to pay a manager to teach him the craft.

Richardson spent many years learning through hard work. He started with a touring company and later joined the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. In 1931, he joined the famous Old Vic company. He played many roles written by William Shakespeare. He even led the Old Vic company for a time. He worked closely with John Gielgud, who taught him many stage techniques. Later, he co-directed the company with Laurence Olivier.

He performed in the West End of London and on Broadway in New York. He appeared in over sixty different films throughout his life. Some of his famous movie roles were in *Things to Come* and *Doctor Zhivago*. He was nominated for Academy Awards twice. One nomination was for the film *The Heiress* in 1949. The second was for *Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes* after he died.

Richardson's life was full of interesting connections. He often worked with his close friend and colleague, John Gielgud.

He also had a long professional bond with the actress Peggy Ashcroft. His acting style was quite different from the usual way people saw the world. Even when he played roles in modern plays, he brought a special feeling to the stage. He continued working in films and theatre until shortly before he died at age eighty.
