Edward IV was a famous King of England.

He lived during a time of great struggle. This period was called the Wars of the Roses. These were civil wars between two groups. One group was the Yorkists. The other group was the Lancastrians. Edward was a leader for the Yorkist side. He wanted to protect his family's claim to the throne. His life was filled with many big changes.

Edward's path to the throne was very difficult. His father was Richard, the Duke of York. Richard was killed in a battle in December 1460. This left Edward as the new Yorkist leader. He was only eighteen years old at the time. He won a victory at Mortimer's Cross in early 1461. Then he fought a huge battle at Towton.

This battle happened during a snowstorm in March 1461. It was the bloodiest battle on English soil. After this, Edward became the King of England.

Edward was a very striking man to see. He was unusually tall for his time. He had blond hair and a strong build.

He liked to wear very fine and splendid clothes. This helped him look powerful compared to King Henry VI. Henry VI was often seen as weak. Edward used his appearance to show his strength. He wanted everyone to know he was a strong leader.

His personal choices also changed his reign. In 1464, Edward secretly married Elizabeth Woodville.

This was a surprise to many people. His main advisor was Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick. People called Warwick the "Kingmaker." Warwick was very angry about the marriage. He felt the King was not listening to him. This caused a big fight between the King and his advisor.

Warwick eventually led a revolt against Edward. He helped put Henry VI back on the throne in 1470. Edward had to flee to a place called Flanders. He did not stay away for long, though. He returned to England in March 1471. He won battles at Barnet and Tewkesbury.

These wins helped him take the throne back. He ruled in peace for twelve years until his death in 1483.
