Edward III was a very important King of England.

He ruled for fifty years, which is one of the longest reigns in English history. He became king in January 1327 when he was only fourteen years old. His father, Edward II, had been a very unpopular leader. Many nobles and common people were unhappy with how his government worked. Because of this, Edward's mother, Isabella of France, helped take control of the country.

This was a difficult time for the young prince.

At first, a man named Roger Mortimer ruled England for the young king. Mortimer was not a kind leader and he took land from many nobles. Edward eventually decided to take control for himself. In October 1330, Edward and his friend William Montagu captured Mortimer at Nottingham Castle.

After Mortimer was executed, Edward began his own personal reign. He was a practical leader who learned by doing things. He also worked to make the English Parliament grow and change. He even created new earls to help him lead the country.

Edward III is most famous for his many military successes. He first fought in Scotland to win back lands that had been lost.

After winning in Scotland, he turned his attention to France. He claimed he was the rightful heir to the French throne. This decision started the Hundred Years' War in 1337. This was a very long conflict between England and France. This first part of the war was known as the Edwardian War. It changed how people thought about power in Europe.

During the war, Edward won some very big battles. He had great victories at Crécy and at Poitiers.

These wins led to the Treaty of Brétigny in 1360. This treaty gave England more land and was very good for the country. However, things changed as Edward got older. He became sick and had trouble managing his government. By 1375, England had lost most of the land it won in France. Only the area called the Pale of Calais remained.

Edward III's life shows how much one person can change a nation. He turned England into a very strong military power.

Even during hard times like the Black Death, his reign saw important changes in laws. He was a king who could be very kind to people, but he also loved war. When he died in 1377, his grandson Richard II became the next king. Many historians today study his life to understand the Middle Ages. His story is a big part of how England became the country it is today.
