He was born on October 1, 1930, in a large redbrick house in Limerick. His family was quite big, with eight children in total. As a young man, Richard was a very talented rugby player. He played for teams like Garryowen and Crescent College. Sadly, he had to stop playing sports after he caught tuberculosis. Even after he stopped playing, he remained a huge fan of rugby matches. He often went to see the Munster and Young Munster teams play.

Richard decided to study acting to find a new path. He went to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, also known as LAMDA. Before that, he had tried other schools but was told he was too old. He spent nearly ten years working on stages across the United Kingdom. This time helped him learn his craft very well. Eventually, his hard work led to his first big movie role. In 1959, he appeared in the film Alive and Kicking.
