Richard Thomas Griffiths was a famous English actor who spent his life telling stories.

He was loved for his many different roles on stage and screen. Many people recognize him as the short-tempered Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films. He also played Inspector Henry Crabbe in the TV show Pie in the Sky. His talent allowed him to move between funny roles and very serious ones. He worked hard to bring each character to life for his audience.

His journey into acting involved many steps and hard work. As a young boy, he learned British Sign Language because his parents were deaf. He studied drama at Stockton & Billingham College and later at Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre. After school, he joined the BBC Radio Drama Company to practice his craft. He started in small theaters, acting in plays and sometimes even managing them. He eventually found great success in big films and on famous stages.

Griffiths had an interesting early life in North Riding of Yorkshire. He was born in Thornaby-on-Tees to Jane and Thomas Griffiths. When he was eight years old, he received radiation therapy for his pituitary gland. This treatment changed his metabolism and caused him to struggle with obesity later in life. He also grew up in a Roman Catholic home. He worked as a porter for a company called Littlewoods before returning to school.

Throughout his career, he earned many important honors and awards. In 2005, he won a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award for playing Hector in The History Boys. He was also nominated for a BAFTA Award for his work in the film version of that play. In 2008, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, known as an OBE. He appeared in many famous movies like Gandhi, Chariots of Fire, and Hugo. He even provided voices for characters in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

His work connects to many parts of modern culture that people enjoy today. You might see his face in the magical world of Harry Potter or the adventures of Pirates of the Caribbean. He also performed in classic plays at the National Theatre, such as Equus and The Habit of Art. Even in his later years, he performed in shows like The Sunshine Boys with Danny DeVito. Richard Griffiths passed away in 2013 at the age of 65. He is remembered for the many wonderful characters he shared with the world.
