He became an icon of the British New Wave film movement. His career spanned many decades and different types of art. He was successful on the stage, in movies, and on the music charts. People recognized his talent through many prestigious awards. In 2020, The Irish Times ranked him as the third greatest Irish film actor. His life was a journey of learning, struggle, and immense professional success.

Harris was born on October 1, 1930, in Limerick, Ireland. He grew up in a large redbrick house called Overdale. His family was quite big, with eight children in total. His father, Ivan Harris, worked as a flour merchant. Richard received his education from the Jesuits at Crescent College. As a teenager, he was a very talented rugby union player. He played for the Munster Junior and Senior Cup teams. However, his athletic career ended when he contracted tuberculosis. This illness forced him to stop playing competitive sports.

After recovering, Harris moved to England to pursue a career in directing. He found it difficult to find the right training at first. He was rejected by two major drama schools because he was 24. At that age, the schools felt he was too old for students. He eventually enrolled at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, or LAMDA. While studying, he even directed a production of a play called Winter Journey. After finishing his studies, he joined Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop. He spent nearly ten years working on various stages across the United Kingdom to learn his craft.

His film career began to grow in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He made his debut in the 1959 film Alive and Kicking. He also played small roles in films like Shake Hands with the Devil and The Guns of Navarone. His first major breakthrough came in 1963 with the film This Sporting Life. In this movie, he played a coal miner who becomes a rugby league player. This role earned him the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. It also resulted in his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Harris took on many diverse and famous roles. He played King Arthur in the 1967 film Camelot. This performance earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. He later performed the role on Broadway in 1981. He also starred in the successful film A Man Called Horse in 1970. In 1971, he starred in the BBC television film The Snow Goose. This role earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. He even appeared in the 1977 film Orca, where he battled a killer whale.

Harris was also a successful recording artist. In 1968, he released a version of the song "MacArthur Park" by Jimmy Webb. The song was a major hit in several countries. It reached number one in Australia, Jamaica, and Canada. It also became a top-ten hit in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United States. For this musical achievement, he received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. This showed he could master both acting and singing.

In his later years, Harris achieved new levels of fame with younger audiences. He played the wise wizard Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films. He appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2001. He also appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002. This second film was his final role in cinema. Even as he aged, his ability to connect with different generations remained strong.
