William Bass is a scientist who studies human remains. He is a forensic anthropologist. This means he studies bones to solve mysteries. He works at the University of Tennessee. In 1980, he started a special research place there. Many people call it the "Body Farm." It was the first place like this in the world.

Bass studies how bodies change after death. This is called decomposition. He wants to know how long someone has been dead. His work helps police and doctors. They use his ideas to solve crimes.

He once saw a very strange case. A body was found in a metal coffin. The box was airtight. This means no air could get in or out. Because of this, the body did not change much. It was actually a soldier from a war long ago.

Bass has helped with many big cases. He even helped find how a famous singer named The Big Bopper died. He also studies cremation. This is when a body is burned. He is a very important teacher and researcher.
