William Graham Sumner was a famous teacher at Yale University. He was born in New Jersey in 1840. He loved to learn new things. He studied many languages like Greek and Latin. He even taught himself many more later in life.

Sumner was a leader in the study of sociology. Sociology is the study of how people live in groups. He taught the very first sociology course in North America. Many students wanted to take his classes. He was known as a very strong and lively teacher.

Before he was a professor, Sumner was a priest. He worked in a church for a few years. He spoke to people about hard work and being careful with money. Later, he left the church to teach at Yale. He spent most of his life there.

Sumner also wrote many books. He wrote about money and how countries rule others. He used a new word, "ethnocentrism," to describe how people view their own culture as best. He also spoke for the middle class. He called these people the "forgotten man." Sumner died in 1910.
