He was born in Illinois in 1841. His family was poor. As a boy, he worked in farms and factories. This left him very little time for school. He loved books and read a lot on his own.

Ward fought in the Civil War. He was against slavery. He was hurt in battle and had to leave the army. After the war, he moved to Washington, D.C. He studied hard and earned many degrees. He worked as a scientist for the government. He studied fossils, which are remains of old plants and animals.

Ward also studied how people live together. This is called sociology. He wrote many books about society. He believed science could help make laws better. In 1905, he helped start a big group for these thinkers. This group is called the American Sociological Association. Ward was its very first president. He also taught at Brown University. His students thought he was very wise.
