Ferdinand Tönnies was a famous German thinker. He was born in 1855 on a farm. He grew up in the countryside. This was different from many other scholars. He studied many things like philosophy and social issues. He wrote over 900 books and papers.

Tönnies is most known for his ideas about groups. He saw two main types of groups. The first type is called Gemeinschaft. This means community. It is like a close family or a small village. People in these groups feel a deep bond. They care for each other for the sake of the group.

The second type is called Gesellschaft. This means society. It is like a big city or a large company. People join these groups to reach a goal. They follow written laws and rules. These groups use police and courts to stay in order.

Tönnies also cared about family life. He thought strong families were the base of culture. He wanted families to help one another. He lived until 1936. He was a leader in his field for many years.
