Veblen went to many colleges. He earned a degree from Yale University. At first, it was hard to find work. He spent seven years looking for a job. Some people may have judged him because of his background. He also did not follow some common religious views.

Later, he became a well-known writer. In 1899, he wrote a famous book. It was called "The Theory of the Leisure Class." In this book, he spoke about "conspicuous consumption." This is when people buy things just to show off. He also studied how technology and groups of people work together. Veblen lived in California at the end of his life. He died in 1929.
