He was an economist and a sociologist. This means he studied money and how groups of people act. He was a well-known critic of capitalism. Capitalism is a way of organizing a country's economy. Veblen wanted people to look closely at how wealth works. He helped start a way of thinking called institutional economics.

His ideas were very interesting to many people. He created the idea of "conspicuous consumption." This is when people buy expensive things just to show off to others. He also wrote about "conspicuous leisure." This describes people who spend time on activities that show they are wealthy. He also looked at how technology and social institutions work together. Some experts call this the Veblenian dichotomy. These ideas still help people study the world today.

In 1899, he published his most famous book. It was called "The Theory of the Leisure Class." He later moved to California. He lived in a house in Menlo Park. He died in August 1929.
