Wiegenlied (Brahms)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The "Wiegenlied" is a very famous lullaby. A lullaby is a soft song used to help babies sleep. A man named Johannes Brahms wrote it in 1868. He wrote this piece for his friend, Bertha Faber. She had just had her second son.

Brahms made the music very special. He used a melody from a song Bertha used to sing. The words for the song come from old German poems. These poems are in a book called "Des Knaben Wunderhorn." The song sounds simple, but it is very beautiful.

Many people have played this song since it was new. In 1869, a singer and a piano player performed it in Vienna. Later, a man named Percy Grainger made a new version for the piano. He liked to use many notes at once. Brahms even used the tune in his Second Symphony. This shows how much he loved the melody. People still love to sing and record this song today. It is one of his most popular works.
