The name comes from an Italian word. This word relates to the evening. Because of this, serenades are often calm and light.

In the past, people used serenades as a greeting. A person might sing to a friend or a lover. They often stood under a window at night.

The singer might play a small instrument. They might use a lute or a guitar.

Later, the music became much larger. In the Baroque era, some used a serenata. This was a show for singers and an orchestra. They played outdoors by artificial light. They used loud instruments like drums and horns.

In the Classical era, Mozart wrote many famous serenades. Some were for weddings. These pieces had many parts, called movements. They could have four to ten movements. One famous piece is called Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

Today, many people still write serenades. They can use many different instruments. Some are for just strings. Others use a piano or even a violin.
