Whiteout (weather)

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A whiteout is a serious weather condition. It makes it very hard to see clearly. This happens when snow, fog, or sand fills the air.

In a true whiteout, the horizon disappears from view. The sky and the ground look exactly the same. This creates a featureless world with no landmarks. Without these points, people can lose their way easily. Even in places they know well, travelers may become disoriented.

There are three main ways this weather works. First, strong winds can blow snow off the ground. This is often called windblown snow. Second, a huge amount of snow can fall at once. This can happen during lake-effect or mountain-effect snow. In these cases, the falling snow hides everything in sight.

Third, thick fog can sit over a snowy area. This is common in wide, open spaces without many trees or hills. All these ways make it nearly impossible to see.

Scientists look at how light moves to explain this. A whiteout happens because sunlight is scattered. Tiny ice crystals or water droplets in the air block the sun. This light gets mixed and blended together.

Because the light is so scattered, you lose visual references. You cannot see the shape of the land or the slope. In very bad cases, a person might even lose their sense of balance. They may feel confused about how their body is moving.

It is important to know that whiteout is not flat-light. Flat-light is a different way that light behaves. In flat-light, sunlight is diffused by particles in the air. This means light comes from many different directions at once. These many light sources create overlapping shadows. These shadows cancel each other out and make the ground look dull.

This makes it hard to see the edges of things. It can make a person feel lost because they lose their sense of depth.

Whiteouts are dangerous for many people and machines. Drivers on big roads often have to stop their cars. This can cause accidents if the car behind cannot see.

Even helicopters can create a whiteout near the ground. The wind from their spinning blades stirs up snow. This can be a hazard to people standing nearby. In 1979, an accident on Mount Erebus in Antarctica was partly caused by whiteout.
