A snow squall is a sudden and heavy snow storm.

These storms bring strong winds and blowing snow. They often create whiteout conditions. A whiteout is when you cannot see clearly because of the snow. These events are similar to blizzards. However, they happen in a small area or for a short time. They can be very dangerous for travelers.

There are two main ways these storms work. The first way is called lake-effect snow. This happens when very cold air moves over warm, open water. The air picks up moisture from the water. This creates clouds that produce heavy snow showers. These showers often hit narrow paths called snowbelts.

Sometimes, the air is so cold that it creates thundersnow. This is snow that comes with lightning and thunder.

The second way is through a frontal snow squall. This type happens along a line of moving air. It is similar to a line of summer thunderstorms. The clouds are much lower, so they are hard to see on radar. These squalls usually last less than 30 minutes in one spot. But the line can move across a very large distance. They can form near a cold front. They might even come in two or three quick bands.

Scientists look for specific things to predict these storms. They look for a sharp change in the wind. They also look for a low-level jet of air. For lake-effect snow, the water and air must have a temperature difference. The water must be unfrozen and the surface temperature should be near freezing. The wind path over the lake must be at least 100 kilometers. These facts help people prepare for the heavy snow.

Snow squalls can cause big problems on roads. The weather changes so fast that drivers may not be ready. This can lead to many car accidents. For example, a squall hit Michigan on January 9, 2015. It caused a huge pile-up with 193 vehicles on I-94.

Some very powerful squalls can even form tornadoes. They are much more sudden than a normal snowstorm.
