There are two main types of snow squalls. The first type is lake-effect snow. This happens when cold air moves over warm water. The air picks up moisture. This makes heavy snow showers. These storms often hit narrow paths called snowbelts. Some squalls even make thundersnow. This is snow with lightning and thunder.

The second type is a frontal snow squall. This happens along a line of moving air. These squalls are very fast. They may last less than 30 minutes.

Snow squalls are very dangerous. They make roads slippery very quickly. They also make it hard to see.
