Whiteout (weather)

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A whiteout is a type of weather. It makes it very hard to see. Snow, fog, or sand can hide the world.

In a whiteout, the sky and ground look the same. You cannot see the horizon. This means you cannot tell where you are.

There are three ways this happens. First, wind can blow snow off the ground. Second, a lot of snow can fall at once. This is called lake-effect snow. Third, thick fog can sit on top of snow.

This happens because light is scattered. Tiny ice crystals or water drops block the sun. The light blends together. This can make you feel lost or lose your balance. A whiteout is not the same as flat-light. Flat-light happens when light comes from many directions. This makes shadows disappear. It makes things look flat and dull. Whiteouts are very dangerous for drivers. People often have to stop their cars. They may hit other cars if they cannot see.

Even helicopters can make a whiteout. Their spinning blades stir up snow from the ground.
