Winter storm

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A winter storm is a powerful weather event. It happens when strong winds meet frozen precipitation. This can include snow, ice pellets, or freezing rain. These storms often happen in the winter. However, they can also occur in late autumn or early spring. Some storms are very large systems. They can cover an entire continent for many days.

How does a winter storm work? It starts when moist air rises into the sky. This rising motion is called lift. Wind can push the air up. Large mountains and hills can also cause lift. The wind picks up moisture from oceans or big lakes. This moisture forms clouds high in the air. If the temperature is below freezing, the moisture falls as snow or ice.

Scientists use special names for different storms. A blizzard is a snowstorm with very strong winds. These winds make it hard to see. This is called low visibility. In the United States, warnings are issued for certain conditions. One warning happens if snow reaches 1 inch in 12 hours. Another happens if ice builds up by 0.25 inches. A blizzard requires winds of at least 35 miles per hour.

These storms can cause many problems. Heavy snow makes roads very slippery. This makes it hard for cars to drive safely. Wet snow is very heavy and can break tree branches. It can even cave in the roofs of houses. Ice storms are also very dangerous. They happen when warm air sits above freezing ground. This creates a layer of freezing rain.

History shows us how big these storms can be. In 1947, snow piles reached 25 feet high. In 1998, an ice storm hit eastern Canada. Three million people lost power during that storm. In 2021, a major storm hit the United States. It caused power outages for 7 to 10 days in Texas. People prepare by keeping food and water ready. They also keep flashlights and warm clothes nearby.
