Whirlwind

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A whirlwind is a spinning column of air. It is also called a vortex. This happens because of heat and wind changes. These spinning tubes can be very large. They can also be quite small. Some whirlwinds last for only a few minutes. Others can last for several hours. They are amazing things to watch.

There are two main types of whirlwinds. The first type is called a major whirlwind. This group includes tornadoes and waterspouts. The second type is a minor whirlwind. These include dust devils and snow devils. Some are called leaf eddies or hay devils. There are also steam devils and debris devils. Even mountainados are a type of minor whirlwind.

Major whirlwinds work in a specific way. They often come from supercell thunderstorms. These are the most powerful storms. First, the storm begins to spin. Then, it hits other winds high in the sky. This makes a spinning funnel form. A cloud then forms over the funnel. This makes the spinning air easy to see.

Minor whirlwinds form differently on the ground. Local winds start to spin near the earth. This creates a small funnel. The wind pushes the funnel across the ground. As it moves, it picks up dust or snow. This makes the spinning air visible to us. These whirlwinds do not last as long. They can stop if they hit a house or a tree.

Whirlwinds are similar to things we see in water. A whirlpool is like a whirlwind in a liquid. Both are spinning vortices. You might see whirlwinds during wind storms. Sometimes, small wind blasts happen first. These blasts can start to rotate. This can create a minor whirlwind. They can be dangerous even if they are small.
