A dust devil is a spinning column of wind.

It is a strong and well-formed whirlwind. These whirlwinds are usually short-lived. They can be quite small or very large. A small one might be only 18 inches wide. A large one can be more than 30 feet wide. They can even grow over half a mile tall. Most dust devils are harmless to people. However, they can occasionally become strong enough to cause damage.

How does a dust devil work? It all starts with heat from the sun. A pocket of hot air near the ground rises quickly. This happens because hot air is less dense than cool air. This rising air is called an updraft. In the right conditions, this updraft begins to rotate. As the air rises, it spins even faster. More hot air rushes inward at the bottom to replace the rising air. This creates a funnel-like chimney of spinning wind.

Dust devils need specific settings to form. They like flat, barren places like deserts or tarmac. Clear skies help the ground absorb solar energy. This energy heats the air near the surface. It is also important to have light winds. Very windy conditions can actually break the spinning effect. The dust devil stays alive by moving over hot air. If it hits cooler air, it will disappear in seconds.

History shows us that these winds can be powerful. On September 14, 2000, a dust devil hit Arizona. It struck the Coconino County Fairgrounds. The winds were as high as 75 miles per hour. This caused damage to many tents and booths. In 2003, a dust devil in Maine lifted a roof. This happened to a two-story building. In 2019, a large dust devil in China was very dangerous. It lifted an inflatable jump house into the air.

We can see similar things in other places. In Australia, people call them "Willy willy." In Ireland, they are called "fairy winds." You might even see them on other planets. The Spirit rover saw dust devils on Mars. Dust devils can even happen in the snow. These are called snow devils. They can also happen over water as steam devils. Even in fields of hay, you might see "hay devils." These are gentle whirlwinds that swirl stalks of hay.
