Dust is made of tiny bits of solid matter.

These particles come from many different places around our world. In the sky, dust can come from soil lifted by wind. This is called an aeolian process. It can also come from volcanic eruptions or pollution. Even space sends dust to Earth from burnt meteorite particles. Dust is everywhere, from our living rooms to the far reaches of the galaxy.

There are many ways dust moves and works. In dry areas, high winds can lift silt-sized material from the ground. This happens through saltation, which is when sand-sized grains bounce along. These particles then travel through the troposphere, the layer of air we live in.

Once in the air, dust acts like an aerosol. This can change how much sunlight hits the Earth. In the Middle East, dust moves in large systems from west to east or east to west. These systems are strongest in the spring and last until mid-summer.

People have studied dust for a long time to understand its impact. In Iran, dust has become a serious issue for the government. Scientists use things like Project-Dust to study these patterns in the Middle East.

In 2018, studies showed that 30 million hectares of land in Iran were affected by wind erosion. This erosion can cause real damage to roads and buildings. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) makes rules to help control dust. They want to keep the air clean and safe for everyone.

Dust has many specific numbers and facts attached to it.

In a home, about 20% to 50% of dust is made of dead skin cells. The rest includes things like hair, pollen, and tiny fibers from clothes. In the air, some dust particles are smaller than 500 micrometers.

Special HEPA filters can trap 99.97% of dust that is 0.3 micrometers big. Even in space, dust is very important. The Sahara desert covers 0.9 billion hectares of land that can produce dust. Drylands cover even more, spanning 5.2 billion hectares.

You can see how dust works in your own life.

If you do not clean a laptop for three years, dust can clog its parts. In your house, dust might clump into "dust bunnies" under your bed. These are held together by static electricity and bits of hair or lint.

On a much larger scale, dust is even in space. It forms the clouds that eventually make new planets. On Mars, huge dust storms can cover the entire planet. Even the glowing tails of comets are made of dust and gas.
