Dust is made of very tiny bits of solid matter.

On Earth, these bits come from many places. Wind can lift soil from dry ground. This is called an aeolian process. Volcanoes also throw dust into the air. Even space sends dust to Earth from burnt meteorites.

Dust in your home is different. About 20 to 50 percent of it is dead skin cells. The rest is made of hair, plant pollen, and tiny fibers from clothes or paper.

Sometimes, dust clumps together under furniture. We call these clumps dust bunnies. They are held together by static electricity.

Dust can also be found in space. It can form clouds that help make new planets.

On Mars, huge dust storms can cover the whole planet. Even the tails of comets are made of dust and gas. Scientists use spacecraft to catch these bits. This helps them learn about our solar system.
