A whirlwind is a spinning tube of air.

It is also called a vortex. This means it is a column of air that rotates. Whirlwinds can be big or small. They can last for minutes or many hours.

Major whirlwinds are the big ones. These include tornadoes and waterspouts. They come from supercell thunderstorms. These are the most powerful types of storms. The storm starts to spin. It hits other winds high up. This makes a funnel spin. A cloud forms over the funnel. This makes it easy to see.

Minor whirlwinds are smaller. A dust devil is a minor whirlwind.

These form when winds spin on the ground. This makes a small funnel. The funnel moves over the ground. It picks up dust or snow. This makes the air look visible. These do not last long. They can stop if they hit a tree or a house. They can still be dangerous. Some small wind blasts can also start a minor whirlwind. These blasts can come from wind storms or rain storms.
