A waterspout is a spinning column of air. It usually looks like a funnel-shaped cloud. This cloud touches the water below.

Most waterspouts are not strong. We call these "fair-weather" waterspouts. They form when clouds grow in warm, wet air. These spouts follow five steps. First, a dark spot appears on the water. Next, a spiral pattern forms. Then, a ring of spray appears. After that, a visible funnel grows. Finally, the spout fades away.

Some waterspouts are different. They are called tornadic waterspouts. These are just tornadoes that happen over water. They come from very strong storms.

Waterspouts can be found in many places. They happen in the tropics and near coasts. They can even form on lakes and rivers. In 2003, over 66 waterspouts were seen in one week on the Great Lakes. These spinning winds can lift small animals. They can suck up fish or frogs. Sometimes, these animals fall from the sky as rain!
