Mist is a natural thing in our air.

It is made of tiny water droplets. These droplets stay floating in the air as aerosols. This happens through a way of working called condensation. Mist is a type of dispersion. This means small things are spread out in a larger space. Mist can make the world look soft and quiet. It is a beautiful part of our weather.

Mist forms in a very specific way. It starts when warm and moist air meets cold air. This sudden cooling causes the water vapor to change. The vapor turns into tiny liquid drops. This is just like your breath in the winter. It can also happen when hot sauna steam goes outside.

Tiny bits in the air help this happen. These bits are called nucleation sites. Water can gather on these sites to congeal. Even volcanic dust or ions from polar lights can act as these sites.

People often mix up mist and fog. They are similar because they both use condensation. However, they are not the same thing. Fog is much thicker and more opaque. It usually lasts for a longer time than mist. Mist is thinner and more transparent.

You can see through mist more easily. Scientists use visibility to tell them apart. If visibility is low, it is called fog. In the United Kingdom, drivers use this to stay safe. Pilots use a distance of 1 km to define fog.

There are many different types of mist. You might see mist on mountain tops. This happens when temperatures are very low. There is also something called freezing mist. It is like freezing fog but it is less dense.

Fog that falls below 0°C is called freezing fog. It stays suspended in the air even when cold. Some people also talk about Scotch mist. This is a light and steady drizzle. It looks very much like mist.

Mist can create amazing sights in nature. Light can hit the tiny water droplets in the air. This causes refraction and scattering. This is how a rainbow might form in the mist.

Mist often appears near shores or water. It is also common near marshes or clear areas. You might see it covering a lake. It can even hide a large building or a mountain. The world looks very different when mist is present.
