Dew

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever noticed tiny water droplets on the grass in the morning? This is called dew. It is a way that water in the air turns into liquid. This happens through condensation. Dew appears on thin, exposed objects like leaves or railings. It can also appear on car roofs or bridges. If the temperature gets very low, the dew turns into ice. We call this frost.

Dew works through a specific way it happens. At night, surfaces lose heat by sending out infrared radiation. This cooling happens most easily on clear nights without clouds. Some objects, like grass or leaves, are not warmed by heat from the ground. These objects reach a special temperature called the dew point. The dew point is the temperature where water vapor in the air turns into liquid. When a surface hits this point, droplets form.

People have wondered about dew for a very long time. An old book called On the Universe was written before 250 BC. It described dew as moisture falling from a clear sky. In Greek myths, a goddess named Ersa was the personification of dew. Another myth says the dawn goddess, Eos, created dew when she cried. In the Hebrew religion, dew is very important for farming. It is even used in special prayers during Passover.

Scientists use special tools to measure how much dew forms. One tool is called a drosometer. It uses a small surface to record weight changes on a drum. Most dew amounts are small, often less than 0.5 mm per night. However, dew is vital in very dry places. In the Negev Desert in Israel, dew provides almost half the water for three plant species. These plants are Salsola inermis, Artemisia sieberi, and Haloxylon scoparium.

Dew is more than just a morning sight. It helps keep things like fungi and potato blight moist. People are even finding ways to catch dew to help others. The International Organization for Dew Utilization works on special tools. In Kutch, India, researchers made machines that catch dew. These collectors can gather more than 200 liters of water in one night. This helps people living in areas where it does not rain much.
