He performed on big stages and in movies. Many people called him "the man with a thousand faces." This was because he could play so many different parts. Other actors even called him a "demonic genius." One actor, Oskar Werner, even used Krauss's name for his own stage name. He was a major star in the early 1900s.

He was known for his amazing skill at acting.

Krauss learned how to act by doing it. He did not go to a special school for acting. He started by working as an extra in a theater. Later, he joined a traveling theater company. In 1903, he made his first big debut in Guben. He worked in many cities like Munich and Nuremberg. In 1913, a director named Max Reinhardt hired him. This helped him join the famous Deutsches Theater in Berlin. He played many roles, like King Claudius in the play Hamlet.

His career grew very large over many years. In 1916, he started acting in films. He became a huge star in a 1920 film called The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. This movie is very important to German Expressionism, a style of art. He also played roles in films like Waxworks and The Student of Prague. He traveled to perform in London and on Broadway in New York City. He was a very busy and talented performer.

However, Krauss is also a very controversial figure. He supported the Nazi Party and their ideas. He held a high job in the Reichskulturkammer theatre department. In 1934, he was even named a "State Actor." In 1940, he acted in a film called Jud Süß. This film was used as propaganda against Jewish people. He played six different characters in that one movie. Because of this work, his name is linked to a very dark time in history.

After World War II ended, Krauss had a hard life. He had to leave his home in Austria. He was also banned from acting in Germany for a while. He had to finish a program to show he was not a Nazi. Later, he was allowed to act again and even won awards. In 1954, he received the Order of the Federal Republic of Germany. He wrote a book about his life in 1958. He died in Vienna when he was 75 years old.
