He lived during a very exciting time for the theater. People loved to watch stories on stage. Iffland was special because he could make people laugh. He was very good at playing comedy roles. His journey to the stage began with a big choice. He was born in Hanover in 1759. His father wanted him to become a clergyman. However, Iffland preferred the theater instead. At age eighteen, he ran away to Gotha. He went there to prepare for his career. He studied under a teacher named Hans Ekhof. He learned very quickly and grew into a star.

Many important events happened during his long career. In 1779, he began working in Mannheim. In 1782, he played Franz Moor in "The Robbers." This play was written by Friedrich Schiller. Later, Iffland moved to Berlin in 1796. He became the director of the national theater of Prussia. By 1811, he was a general director for royalty. He died in Berlin on September 22, 1814.
