Iffland's career began with a significant personal decision. He was born in Hanover to a family with religious expectations. His father intended for him to become a clergyman. However, Iffland felt a strong pull toward the stage. At the age of eighteen, he ran away to Gotha. He went there specifically to prepare for a theatrical career. He studied under the instruction of Hans Ekhof. Iffland made rapid progress during his training. This allowed him to accept an engagement in Mannheim in 1779. This move marked his rise into professional prominence.

As an actor, Iffland was known for specific types of roles. He was particularly conspicuous in comedy parts. He often portrayed fine gentlemen and polished men of the world. He also frequently played the parts of distinguished princes. He was a key figure in major theatrical premieres. In 1782, he played the lead role of Franz Moor. This was in the acclaimed premiere of "The Robbers" by Friedrich Schiller. His reputation grew as he performed in many different towns. He was highly skilled at capturing the essence of these characters.

Iffland was also a highly productive dramatic author. He specialized in domestic dramas, which are plays depicting everyday life. He possessed a remarkable power for devising effective situations for the stage. His writing showed a thorough mastery of technical stage necessities. Some of his most well-known plays include "Die Jäger" and "Dienstpflicht." Other notable works are "Die Advokaten," "Die Mündel," and "Die Hagstolzen." He also published several collections of his writings. Between 1798 and 1802, he issued his "Dramatischen Werke" in sixteen volumes. He also included his autobiography, "Meine theatralische Laufbahn," in this collection. Later, from 1807 to 1809, he published two volumes of "Neue dramatische Werke."

Beyond acting and writing, Iffland held major leadership positions. In 1796, he settled in Berlin to advance his career. He became the director of the national theater of Prussia. By 1811, he had reached the position of general director. In this role, he oversaw all presentations before royalty. He was known for his conscientious care when producing works. He produced the contemporary and classical works of Goethe and Schiller. However, he had little understanding for the drama of the romantic writers. This shows his specific tastes in theatrical style.

Iffland also served as an influential dramatic critic. He published his thoughts in a work called "Almanach für Theater und Theaterfreunde." German actors placed a very high value on his reasonings. They looked to his hints to improve their own performances. This made him a mentor to the acting profession. His influence extended from the stage to the written word. He helped define the standards for how actors should approach their craft. His critical voice was a respected part of the theatrical community.

Today, Iffland's legacy remains visible in German culture. A bronze portrait statue of him was erected in 1864. This statue stands in front of the theater in Mannheim. A street in Berlin is also named in his honor. Perhaps most importantly, his name is attached to the Iffland-Ring. This is a special ring that bears his likeness. It is given to the most important German-speaking actor. The recipient is decided by the previous holder of the ring. This tradition keeps his memory alive in the acting profession.
