He served as an impresario, which is a person who manages and organizes a theater company. He was also a dramatist, actor, singer, and composer. Born Johann Joseph Schickeneder in 1751, he grew up in the Electorate of Bavaria. His parents were poor domestic servants. After his father died, his mother sold religious items from a wooden shed in Regensburg. Schikaneder received his education at a Jesuit school. He also trained as a singer at the local cathedral. These early experiences shaped his versatile career in the performing arts.

Schikaneder began his professional journey around 1773 with Andreas Schopf's theatrical troupe.

He performed various styles, including opera, farce, and Singspiel. A Singspiel is a type of musical drama that includes spoken dialogue. In 1774, he danced at a court ballet in Innsbruck. The following year, his Singspiel Die Lyranten debuted there. This production was a great success and was performed frequently. Schikaneder demonstrated his talent by acting as the librettist, composer, and principal singer. This ability to handle many roles allowed him to lead his own productions.

In the fall of 1780, Schikaneder's troupe stayed in Salzburg. During this time, he became a close family friend of the Mozarts.

The Mozart family included Leopold, Nannerl, and Wolfgang. The Mozarts often attended his shows. They even invited him to participate in Bölzlschiessen, which was their favorite family sport of dart shooting. This friendship led to a significant musical promise. Before leaving Salzburg for Munich, Mozart promised to write a recitative and aria for Schikaneder. This music was intended for Schikaneder's production of Die zwey schlaflosen Nächte. Their connection proved vital for the future of operatic history.

Schikaneder moved to Vienna and worked with director Hubert Kumpf at the Kärntnertortheater.

This period lasted from November 1784 to February 1785. Emperor Joseph II had invited him to perform after seeing him in Pressburg. The performances attracted large audiences and the imperial court. Schikaneder also engaged in political drama. He produced a comedy called Der Fremde. This play featured a character who caricatured the Viennese aristocracy. He even attempted to produce The Marriage of Figaro by Beaumarchais. Although the Emperor canceled that production, Schikaneder entered imperial service from 1785 to 1786.

In May 1790, Schikaneder partnered with Eleonore Schikaneder at the Theater auf der Wieden.

This company was financed by Joseph von Bauernfeld, a Masonic brother of Mozart. The troupe focused on opera and musical comedies. They performed works like Der Dumme Gärtner aus dem Gebirge. They also produced fairy tale operas, such as Oberon in 1789. These performances were noted for their high musical standards. One contemporary observer described the conductor leading the orchestra like a general commanding an army. This era of production set the stage for his most famous achievement.

In September 1791, Schikaneder's company premiered Die Zauberflöte, or The Magic Flute.

Schikaneder wrote the libretto, which is the text used in an opera. The story combined Masonic elements with traditional fairy-tale themes. Schikaneder also performed the role of Papageno. Some accounts suggest he influenced the music itself. One story claims he told Mozart to change a duet to better express astonishment. He suggested the characters should stammer their names in amazement. Another story says he suggested the March of the Priests for the second act. While musicologists debate these specific details, the opera was a massive success. It sold out frequently and ran for over one hundred performances in its first months.

Schikaneder continued to manage the theater and produce works for many years.

He maintained seven Mozart operas in his repertory, performing them in German. He also hosted Academies, which were classical music concerts. A young Beethoven even appeared as a piano soloist at his events. However, his elaborate productions were very expensive. By 1798, his debt reached 130,000 florins. His landlord canceled his lease because of this debt. He was eventually saved when he partnered with a merchant named Bartholomäus Zitterbarth. Schikaneder remained a central figure in the Viennese musical landscape until his death in 1812.
