He was a singer, an actor, a composer, and a writer. He also worked as an impresario, which is a person who manages a theater company. Schikaneder was born in Straubing in the Holy Roman Empire. His parents were very poor domestic servants. He grew up in Regensburg and learned to sing at the local cathedral. Later, he joined a traveling group of performers around 1773. He performed many types of shows, including opera and Singspiel, which are musical plays.

Schikaneder became very close friends with the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The two men spent time together in Salzburg around 1780. The Mozart family even invited Schikaneder to play their favorite sport, which was dart shooting. This friendship led to one of the most famous operas ever made. Schikaneder wrote the libretto, or the words, for Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte. This opera is known in English as The Magic Flute. It premiered in September 1791 at the Theater auf der Wieden. Schikaneder also performed in the show as the funny character Papageno.

There are many stories about how Schikaneder helped shape this famous opera.

Some people say he gave Mozart advice about the music. One story claims he told Mozart to change a duet. He wanted the music to show how surprised the characters were. Instead of just saying names, the characters were to stammer in amazement. Another story says he suggested the March of the Priests for the second act. While some music experts doubt these stories, they show how involved he was. He truly cared about making the theater experience wonderful for everyone.

Schikaneder was also a builder and a leader in the music world.

He helped build a famous building called the Theater an der Wien. He managed a successful company at the Theater auf der Wieden for many years. His troupe performed many different shows, including fairy tale operas like Oberon. He even hosted special concerts called Academies. These concerts featured music by great composers like Haydn. A young Beethoven even appeared as a piano soloist at one of his events. Schikaneder worked hard to keep these beautiful traditions alive.

Running a theater was a very hard job that cost a lot of money.

His shows were elaborate and very popular with the public. However, the high costs of these productions led to a lot of debt. By 1798, he owed 130,000 florins to his landlord. He had to find a wealthy merchant named Bartholomäus Zitterbarth to help him. This partnership saved his company from closing. Even when things were difficult, Schikaneder stayed dedicated to the art. He left behind a great legacy of music and drama for the world to enjoy.
