Claude Rains

Claude Rains was a legendary actor who lived for many decades.

He was known for his amazing ability to play many different characters. Many people remember him as a great character star in Hollywood. His journey into acting began with hard work and practice. Rains grew up in London as one of twelve children. He spent much time in theaters because his father was an actor. He also worked as a prompter and a stage manager. Eventually, he became an understudy and then moved to larger roles.

Life was not always easy for the young actor. During World War I, Rains served in the British Army. He served in the London Scottish regiment and later became a captain. In November 1916, he was involved in a gas attack at Vimy. This event caused him to lose 90 percent of the vision in his right eye. It also caused damage to his vocal cords.

He had to work very hard to fix his speech. He practiced every day to change his Cockney accent. He developed a unique Mid-Atlantic accent that was partly English and partly American. This new voice helped him become a leading stage actor in London.

After moving to the United States, Rains became a massive star.

He made his American film debut in The Invisible Man in 1933. He later signed a big contract with Warner Bros. in 1935. He played famous roles in movies like The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1938. He also appeared in the classic film Casablanca in 1942. Rains was the first actor to receive a million-dollar salary. He earned this for his role in Caesar and Cleopatra in 1945. He continued acting in many films until his final role in 1965.
