A web server is a special kind of computer software.

Its main job is to listen for requests from people using the internet. When you use a web browser, you are acting as a user agent. Your browser sends a request using a set of rules called HTTP. The server receives this request and sends back a resource. This resource might be a web page or an error message.

Some servers are very small and live inside home routers. Large websites use hundreds of fast computers kept in metal racks.

Huge websites might even use a server farm. This is a massive group of many servers working together.

There are two main ways a server provides content. The first way is through static content. This means the files already exist and are ready to be sent. These files can be served very quickly to many people. The second way is through dynamic content.

A separate program creates these pages at the exact moment they are requested. This allows for many different kinds of interactive applications. Dynamic content is more flexible than static files. It can change based on what the user needs at that time.

The story of the web server began at CERN. In March 1989, Sir Tim Berners-Lee proposed a new project. He wanted to help scientists share information more easily. He called his idea a hypertext system. By October 1990, he and Robert Cailliau improved the plan. They wrote software that ran on NeXT workstations. One of these programs was the first web server. It was later known as CERN httpd.

This early server used a very basic rule set called HTTP 0.9.

In 1991, the web moved across the ocean to the USA. This allowed for trans-continental communication between browsers and servers. By 1993, CERN made the web software public domain. This meant anyone could use or improve the code. In 1994, a new server called NCSA httpd became popular. It could handle dynamic content using a method called CGI. Later, the Apache HTTP server project started in 1995.

Microsoft also entered the field in mid-1995 with IIS. These tools helped the web grow very fast.

As the internet grew, web servers had to change. New rules like HTTP/1.1 helped servers handle more connections at once. This was important for loading pages with many images. Many different programs began to compete for users. Apache was the most used server for a long time. It held the lead from mid-1996 until the end of 2015. Eventually, other servers like Nginx became more popular.

In 2015, a new version called HTTP/2 was released. This version brought new ways to make the web faster.
