Web browser

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A web browser is a special application used to access websites. You might use one on a desktop, a laptop, or a tablet. They also work on smartphones, smartwatches, and even smart televisions.

Many people think a browser is the same as a search engine. However, a search engine is just a website that provides links. You often use a browser to visit those search engines. In 2023, about 5.4 billion people used a browser to explore the web.

Using a browser follows a specific way it works. First, you type a URL, which is a web address, into the address bar. Most URLs start with http or https. The browser then acts as an HTTP client to fetch files from a web server. These files include text, images, and style sheets.

A part called a rendering engine converts these files into a visual page. Some browsers also use JavaScript engines to run complex interactive apps. To speed things up, browsers use a cache to store items like large images.

Browsers have a long history of change. Sir Tim Berners-Lee created the first browser, called WorldWideWeb, in 1990. Later, Nicola Pellow wrote the Line Mode Browser for simple terminals. In April 1993, the Mosaic browser was released. Mosaic was the first to gain mainstream popularity because of its easy interface.

This helped spark the Internet boom of the 1990s. Soon, Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer began a famous "browser war."

Today, different companies make many different browsers. Google Chrome is the most popular with about 69% market share. Safari is second with about 16% market share.

Microsoft Edge holds about 5% of the market. Firefox and Samsung Internet each have about 2% share. Opera also has about 2% of the market. Most people now use mobile devices for web traffic. As of February 2025, mobile devices represent 62% of all web traffic.

Browsers include many helpful tools for users. You can use tabs to keep many pages open at once. Most browsers have back and forward buttons to move between pages. You can also set bookmarks to save your favorite sites.

Some browsers even have built-in artificial intelligence, known as AI. For example, Chrome has the Gemini chatbot. Edge has the Copilot chatbot. These tools help make exploring the digital world much easier.
