A server is a computer or a program that provides data and services to other computers. These other computers are called clients. This way of working is known as the client-server model.

One server can help many clients at once. At the same time, one client can use many different servers. This setup is the foundation of the entire internet. Almost every action you take online involves a server somewhere in the world.

Most servers work using a request-response model. This is a simple two-step way of talking. First, a client sends a request for a specific piece of information. Then, the server performs an action and sends a response back. This response usually includes a result or an acknowledgment.

There is another way called the publish-subscribe pattern. In this version, clients sign up to receive certain messages. The server then pushes those messages to the clients without being asked again.

People have used the word "server" in computing for a long time. The term comes from queueing theory from the mid-20th century. In 1969, a document called RFC 5 described the ARPANET. This was the early version of the internet we use today. That document used the term "server-host" to describe one type of computer. It used "user-host" to describe the other.

This helped people distinguish between those who provide services and those who use them.

There are many different kinds of servers for different jobs. A web server hosts the pages you see on the World Wide Web. A mail server makes email communication possible. You might also use a file server to share folders or a print server to share a printer. Game servers let many people play video games together in the same world.

Other types include database servers for organized data and media servers for streaming video or music. Even a laptop can act as a server if it runs the right software.

Because they do so much work, many servers are very powerful. They are often specialized pieces of hardware designed to be more reliable than a home computer. These machines are often kept in data centers. These centers have very stable power and internet connections. To stay running, large servers use extra parts like dual power supplies. Some parts are "hot swappable," meaning they can be replaced while the server is still running.
