A proxy server is a helpful middleman for the internet.

In computer networking, it is a server application that acts as an intermediary. Instead of connecting directly to a web server, a client sends a request to the proxy. The proxy then evaluates that request and performs the network transactions. This can make things simpler or help control how requests work. It can also provide benefits like privacy or security for the user. Proxies were originally devised to add structure to distributed systems.

There are two main ways these servers work. A forward proxy is used to get data from many different sources on the internet.

An open proxy is a special kind that any internet user can access. In 2008, an expert named Gordon Lyon estimated there are hundreds of thousands of open proxies. Another type is an anonymous proxy. This server tells people it is a proxy, but it hides the client's IP address. This helps keep the original user's location a secret from the destination.

A reverse proxy works in the opposite direction to protect servers.

It sits in front of a private network to control access to web servers. When a client makes a request, the reverse proxy sends it to one or more ordinary servers. The response then comes back through the proxy so the client never sees the real server. This can help with load balancing, which means spreading work across many servers. It can also handle encryption or save copies of pages to make them load faster.

Some proxies are used to filter what people can see online.

Schools and workplaces often use content-filtering proxies to follow rules. These can block certain websites by using blacklists of categories like social networks. They can even scan for viruses or unwanted language in real-time. However, some people use proxies to bypass these filters or government censorship. While this helps them reach blocked sites, it can also be risky. Passing sensitive information like passwords through a proxy might expose it to the operator.

Understanding proxies helps us see how the internet stays organized and safe. They can act as a shield for a group of servers or a mask for a single user. Some proxies are even "transparent," meaning they identify themselves but still help speed up the web by caching sites. Whether they are helping a school manage its network or helping a company protect its data, they are busy working in the background. They turn a direct path into a managed one, making the digital world function smoothly.
