It sits between your computer and the web. Instead of talking to a website directly, your computer talks to the proxy. The proxy then asks the website for what you need. This can hide your identity. The website sees the proxy, but it does not see you. This helps keep your location private.

There are two main kinds of proxies. A forward proxy helps users get data from the internet.

A reverse proxy works in a different way.

It sits in front of a group of web servers. It acts like a shield to protect those servers. It can also help by sharing the work. This is called load balancing. It sends requests to different servers so no single one gets too busy. It can even save copies of pages to make them load faster.
