technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A workstation is a special kind of computer. It is built for technical or scientific work. Most workstations are made for just one person to use at a time.

They often connect to a local area network. This lets the user share tools with other computers. These machines are much more powerful than a normal home computer. They are built to handle very hard jobs. This power makes them important for science and design.

Workstations work by handling complex data very quickly. They are optimized for things like 3D mechanical design.

They can run engineering simulations or help with video editing. Some people use them for medical imaging or making math plots. To help the user, they often use special tools. A person might use multiple screens or a graphics tablet. They might even use a 3D mouse to move objects in a scene. These tools make navigating digital worlds much easier.

These computers have a long and interesting history. The IBM 1620 was an early version from 1959.

It was a small scientific computer named CADET. It was so unique that it lacked arithmetic circuitry. It used a special table of rules to do addition. In 1973, Xerox developed the Alto at Xerox PARC. The Alto was the first to have high-resolution graphics. This helped create the modern idea of a workstation.

Many famous companies helped the workstation market grow.

Companies like Sun Microsystems and Apollo Computer were leaders. In the 1980s, new chips made them very popular. Sun was even called the leader of the industry in 1989. Some high-end models cost many thousands of dollars. By the 1990s, IBM announced the RS/6000. During this time, workstations were the fastest-growing part of the market. Prices even dropped by 20% every year.

Today, the difference between a workstation and a PC is fading.

This happened because normal PCs became much more powerful. In the late 1990s, PCs got better 3D graphics. This was driven by the need for computer gaming. Now, many companies use standard PC parts for workstations. They use common hardware from makers like Dell or HP. This makes them easier to build and use. Even so, they remain vital for professional work.
