A web server is a type of computer software designed to manage requests over a network.

It uses specific rules called protocols to communicate with users. The most common protocol is HTTP, which stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. A more secure version of this is known as HTTPS. When you use a web browser, you are acting as a user agent. Your browser sends a request to the server for a specific resource. The server then responds by sending the content or an error message.

This exchange is the foundation of how we access information online.

Web servers operate by processing requests and delivering specific types of content. One type is static content, which consists of pre-existing files. These files are already stored on the server and can be sent very quickly. Because they are ready to go, they can be easily cached for repeated requests. The second type is dynamic content.

This content is generated at the exact moment a request is made. A separate program communicates with the server software to create these pages. While dynamic content is slower to serve than static files, it allows for a much wider range of complex applications.

The hardware used to run these servers varies based on the amount of traffic they must handle. At the lowest end, you might find embedded systems. For example, a home router often runs a small web server to provide a configuration interface.

High-traffic websites require much more power. They often run on racks of high-speed computers.

To manage massive amounts of data, companies use server farms. A server farm is a large group of many web servers working together to handle extreme traffic.

The history of the web server began at CERN in Switzerland. In March 1989, Sir Tim Berners-Lee proposed a project to ease information exchange among scientists. He suggested using a hypertext system. By October 1990, he and Robert Cailliau enriched this proposal. They developed software libraries and three main programs for NeXT workstations. One of these was a web server called CERN httpd.

This original server used a very early protocol known as HTTP 0.9.

In 1991, the technology moved to the United States when a server was installed at SLAC. This allowed for trans-continental communication between browsers and servers. In April 1993, CERN made its web software public domain. This allowed developers to create new tools without legal concerns. In 1994, NCSA httpd became a notable server because it could serve dynamic content using CGI.

By 1995, the Apache HTTP server project began. This same year, Microsoft released IIS for the Windows NT operating system. These developments marked the start of a competitive commercial market.

As the internet grew, servers had to become more scalable. New standards like HTTP/1.1 were introduced to allow persistent connections. This helped browsers load heavy pages with many images more efficiently. Between 1996 and 1999, commercial options like Netscape Enterprise Server and Microsoft IIS were leaders. However, the open-source Apache HTTP Server became the most popular choice. Apache held the lead in market share from mid-1996 until the end of 2015.

Eventually, other servers like Nginx began to surpass it.

Modern web servers now face new technical challenges. In 2015, a new protocol version called HTTP/2 was released. Implementing this version is very complex for developers. It requires encrypted connections and new ways to handle message priority and compression. Some developers of less popular servers chose not to support it immediately. They felt the complexity might introduce new bugs. Instead, they waited to see if the investment was truly justified. Today, web servers continue to evolve to meet the needs of a connected world.
