A web page is a digital document accessed through a web browser.

You can think of a web page as a single sheet of paper. When many pages are linked together under one domain name, they form a website. This is a metaphor similar to how many paper pages are bound into a single book. Web pages are essential for sharing information across the global internet. They allow users to view text, images, and videos in an interactive way.

To see a page, you must use a Uniform Resource Locator, or URL. The URL is a distinct address that identifies each specific web page. You can see this address in the address bar at the top of your browser. When you input a URL, the browser begins a specific retrieval process. It finds a web server and requests the necessary content from it. The browser then transforms that raw data into a visual representation on your screen.

If you click a link, the browser repeats this entire process for the new URL.

Web pages are built using several different layers of code. The core element is a text file written in HyperText Markup Language, or HTML. HTML specifies the actual content, such as text, images, and video. To control how the page looks, developers use Cascading Style Sheets, known as CSS. CSS rules define the presentation and can be embedded in HTML or kept in separate files. Most pages also include JavaScript programs to enable various behaviors. Some modern pages even use a supplement called WebAssembly to add more functionality.

There are two main ways a server can deliver these pages to you. The first type is called a static web page. A static page is retrieved from the server's file system without any changes. The second type is a dynamic web page. A dynamic page is created by the server on the fly. To do this, the server often reads from a database to fill out a specific template. A search engine results page is a common example of a dynamic page. The most sophisticated versions of these systems are called web apps. These combine all the coding elements in a very complex manner.

Security is a vital part of how web browsers function. Browsers use the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, or HTTP, to retrieve content. To keep users safe, there are two important optional security features. One is an encrypted mode called HTTPS. This mode greatly reduces the chance of a third party eavesdropping on your data. The other feature is a Content Security Policy. This specific policy helps protect against various cross-site scripting attacks. Most mainstream web browsers support both of these important safety tools.

Understanding these components helps explain how the modern internet operates. The relationship between the browser, the server, and the code is a constant cycle of requests and responses. When you navigate from one site to another, you are moving between different URLs and servers. The combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript allows for a highly interactive experience. This system turns simple text files into the complex digital world we use every day.

Web technology continues to evolve with new languages and methods. While HTML and CSS remain the foundation, tools like WebAssembly and web apps show how much more complex pages can become. The distinction between static and dynamic delivery remains a core part of how servers manage information. Whether you are looking at a simple page or a complex application, the underlying mechanics of URLs and HTTP are always at work. This structure ensures that billions of people can access information safely and quickly.
