A war flag is a special type of flag used by a country's military.

People also call these flags an ensign, a standard, or a battle flag. When these flags are used on land, they are for the army. If a flag is used on a ship at sea, it is called a naval ensign. Most countries today do not have a separate flag just for war. Instead, they use their main national flag for their military forces. This makes things simple for everyone to recognize.

In the past, people used different kinds of field signs. A field sign is a way to show where a group is.

These signs were used in warfare during the Bronze Age. Later, during the Iron Age, flags began to appear in Asia. This might have happened in China or India. These early signs were often called vexilloid, which means they were flag-like. They were not always simple flags on a pole.

Many famous groups used these special symbols long ago.

The Romans used a standard that looked like an eagle. The Sarmatians used a standard that looked like a dragon. The Romans also used something called a vexillum. This was a flag that hung from a horizontal crossbar. In ancient Persia, every army division had its own standard. Even the officers had banners hanging over their tents to show where they were.

During the medieval period, the way flags were used changed. Simple flags became very common for military groups. They were often used alongside heraldry. Heraldry is a system of symbols shown on shields. In Japan, foot soldiers carried flags called sashimono.

Not every group used symbols from shields, though. Some free cities used flags that were different. For example, the city of Lucerne used a blue and white flag. They started using this field sign in the mid-13th century.

Understanding war flags helps us see how people organized themselves. It shows how leaders needed to signal to their people.

Even though the shapes of flags change, the goal stays the same. They help people find their way during important events. Today, seeing a flag can tell you a lot about a country. It connects the history of old battles to the flags we see now. We can see how simple signs grew into the flags of today.
