A military volunteer is a person who chooses to join an army. They join by their own free will. This is different from a conscript, who is required to serve. They are also not mercenaries, who are people hired to fight for money. Some people even travel to help a different country. This happened during the Spanish Civil War.

Volunteers are very important for many types of militaries.

In the United States, the word "volunteer" had a special meaning. Troops raised as state militia were always called volunteers. This was true even if they were picked through conscription. Both these groups and the regular army were called U.S. troops. The U.S. Army used to have two main groups. They had regulars who served for a long time. They also had "important volunteers" who joined during a war.

Leadership worked differently for volunteer units in the past. An officer in a volunteer unit had a special rank. This rank was separate from their rank in the regular army. Usually, their volunteer rank was higher than their regular rank. This allowed leaders to have more authority during a conflict.

It was a way to organize new groups quickly.

When a war ended, things often went back to normal. Volunteer forces were disbanded once the fighting stopped. Officers with two different ranks had to change back. They would revert to their regular army rank. This meant their high volunteer rank would go away.

George Armstrong Custer is a famous example of this. He was a brigadier general of volunteers during the American Civil War. After the war, he became a captain again. He was later promoted to lieutenant colonel.

Understanding volunteers helps us see how armies change. We can see how people choose to help in times of need. It also shows how rules for ranks can change during a war. Different countries have used these systems at different times.

Learning about them helps us understand history better.
