Hagen's journey started with hard work in New York. He grew up in a working-class family in Rochester. As a young boy, he worked as a caddie. He carried golf bags for players to earn money. He earned ten cents per round to help his family. He practiced his game at the Country Club of Rochester. With help from a professional named Alfred Ricketts, he became an expert. By his mid-teens, he was teaching lessons to club members.

His professional career changed after a very big win. In 1913, he finished 4th in the U.S. Open. Other professionals were not very kind to him then. He vowed to win the tournament the next year. In 1914, he did exactly that by winning the U.S. Open.

He was also a very good baseball player. He even turned down a chance to play for the Philadelphia Phillies. He chose to play golf instead, and his life changed forever.

Hagen fought to make life better for all professional golfers. In the early 1900s, pros were often treated poorly. Some clubs would not let them use the clubhouse. At one tournament in 1920, he even used a car as a private dressing room. He was a very stylish man who wore bright, fancy clothes. He also helped design golf clubs for a company called Wilson. These clubs helped more people afford to play the game. He was the first golfer to earn one million dollars.

Walter Hagen left a huge mark on the world of sports. He won the U.S. Open twice and the PGA Championship five times. He also won the Open Championship four times. He was the first American to win The Open in 1922.
